Wicked problem with my TPACK

TPACK indeed has become one of the wicked problems during my teaching practice. I hope that you will not repeat the same mistake that I considered my greatest teaching-learning experience whether you are trainee teachers or future educators. If I given a chance to mend this problem, I would use appropriate means at appropriate time in appropriate way. But I couldn’t mend this anymore. What Prof. Moses said during Future studies was somehow ringing in my mind as he quoted from Samuel Taylor Coleridge, ‘And in today already walks tomorrow’. He further gave example by comparing two professions, doctor and teacher. Patient will feel immediate effect if the doctor carelessly diagnose the symptom and give the wrong medication. Same goes to teacher. The only different is teacher cannot see the consequences instantly. Let’s watch the video and try to understand yourself what is so fuss about TPACK as I learn this term from my course ICT in the ESL classroom. (11 weeks to go until hallelujah Open-mouthed smile)

This video (1st part) will explain to you what is TPACK, why TPACK, how TPACK in a very creative way. It consists of 5-part video (watch on YouTube) and it takes about 45 minutes. So I would advice you watch this with a cup of coffee and 5-6 hot dog buns.

The TPACK framework emphasizes the role of teachers as decision makers who design their own educational technology environments as needed.“Learning technical skills alone is not sufficient—learning how to integrate technologies into teaching is equally important.“- Mishra, Koehler, and Kereluik (2009) The TPACK framework helps educators reason about which technologies are worth learning; not to learn every technology and then figure out how to apply it. Instead, educators should be able to quickly evaluate new technologies in terms of how they will present content or facilitate pedagogy. Without much elaboration about TPACK, I would like to illustrate one of my wicked lesson plans which I consider teaching with technology is a wicked problem, and wicked problems require creative solutions. Therefore, teachers are designers of the Total PACKage! Before I illustrate, I didn’t realize that I implicitly include how C-k is being taught via P-k, and how T-k helps the P to make the pupils get C until I watched the video. The awakening of TPACK I could see it explicitly as I go through my wicked lesson plan once again.

The lesson happened on 11th of August. (1st time observation-lagitu) I would like to just talk about my presentation stage for this particular wicked lesson. During my presentation stage, I had come out with this wicked solution bringing only computer keyboard in the classroom. My rationale was to integrate technology in the classroom. What I did with the computer keyboard? I asked the pupils to pass it around and touch it, and feel it thinking that by doing that I could implicitly build a schema for them to understand technology. However, the whole idea was failed and disastrous. Imagine passing around the keyboard to all 30 kids? It was time consuming and at last I didn’t manage to complete my lesson according to what had written on the lesson plan. Did my technological help the pedagogical to make the pupils understand better? No. If I were given a chance to improve, I will randomly call the pupil to mimicly type the letter using keyboard and tell the whole class that they can look for the beautiful pictures by typing it out using the computer keyboard. Through that way, I would think that that is the proper solution to build schema about technology on them. Lesson you can learn here is don’t use technology for the sake of using technology without considering whether pupils would benefit from it. (gelabah-labah-ba first time observation) Would you like to know the creative solution that suggested by my supervisor? Don’t use it at all.

Bear in mind when you are teaching in class does not mean that you just use chalk-and-talk method, or never use technology at all due to technical problem. What I would like to emphasize here is to integrate technology, use appropriate means at appropriate time in appropriate way. I welcome any creative solution for my wicked problem if you’re reading this now. Lastly, I would like to end this entry with this earlier quotation, ‘And in today already walks tomorrow’.

Top 10 Wish-List Which I

Wishing. There is power when you wish. And Science cannot explain that.  When I wish, may I give you a concrete example? I wish I can live more than 150 years in this planet earth, because I am interested to know whether there are people like me still using Friendster. I repeat. There is power when you wish, and when you wish, your body response if you believe. Do you believe? What if my wish could affect another person? What do you think?

10 years from now, Malaysia I could see will reach a stage where the country simply cannot function without ICT. ICT and its appliances will grow more affordable, and thus more accessible by society in general. You heard of iPad in the market now, and people are waiting for iPad 2 the next day. The future kids will grow more ICT savvy at a very young age.(takutnye!) Here I have written down 10 things that I wish I can implement in order to transform ICT situation in the school. Starting from 10 is:

10. I will give a talk to the school and school kids (creating awareness) on the topic related to Media literacy. It could be the pros and cons of using social network service.

9. No. I will give a talk to the school and school kids (creating awareness) on the topic related to Media literacy. It could be the pros and cons of using social network service. In my classroom, I ask pupils to join Friendster. Don’t laugh. (ku ingin mengembalikan kegemilangan Friendster-ba!)

8. No. I will give a talk to the school and school kids (creating awareness) on the topic related to Media literacy. It could be the pros and cons of using social network service. In my classroom, I ask pupils to join Friendster. Don’t laugh. (ku ingin mengembalikan kegemilangan Friendster-ba!) I will make sure they all register under their real names and tell them that the purpose of joining Friendster.

7. The purpose of joining Friendster is to create communities of practice environment in my classroom.

6. The purpose of joining Friendster is to create Communities of Practice environment in my classroom. The ideal place to set up COP would be my own English classroom.

Introducing ICT to Year 1 kids

30 minutes before my English lesson with Year 1 kids kick off. Hopefully my lesson goes smoothly as what I have planned. This less than 2 minutes video shows how I prepare my next English lesson at the computer lab.

Reflecting back my 3 months experience teaching via ICT in the school is not something normal for me to do. It takes a lot of time and discipline for me to start this first entry. This is because I have got poor sense of memory, and don’t dare to ask me how I score my history subject during my secondary school. Let me start off by talking about the video above. Pardon me for the quality of the video because I used my Dslr Nokia 6288 (chewah) to record it while waiting my Year 1 kids to come in. For about 3 months, I think I have used the computer lab at the school not more than 6 times. The distance between 1 Cempaka class to computer lab is something that I don’t like to talk about. It takes 15 minutes to bring the kids and settle down before the whole class say ‘Good morning’ to me. The distance is quite far and I wish got bathroom inside the computer lab, so that I can have a hot bathe and feel fresh before I start my lesson.

‘Sir Aaron, today we don’t go to computer lab?’ asked by one of my kids named Thiva. The reason that the kids like to have English class at computer lab I guess is the comfy environment. (ada air-con bah!) If my class were to take place at computer lab, usually that was how I try to integrate my ICT knowledge in the classroom. This is because everything has been properly set up at the computer lab. All you need to do is preparing PowerPoint and turn on the PC. ‘Wah, the picture is soooo beautiful!’ One of the girls shouted. Through PowerPoint presentation used in my English class, I could really captivate my kids’ attention through colourful and big pictures projected on the wall. I could not recall what was the topic that I taught that time, but it was under the theme, world of stories. Kids really like to hear stories. What more you could imagine teaching Year 1 kids, they can out of a sudden come into you and tell their own stories. Oh kids.

In order for me to come out with my lesson with the integration of ICT, I tried my best to apply what I have learnt from the course, Technology in ESL classroom. Software such as photoscape become my ‘helper’. For example, I was using one of the English CD  to be put in my PowerPoint. To do that, I first had to capture the image of stories in the CD, then pasted and edited using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I had to crop in the way that the story sentences disappeared. The reason is because I have to come out with simplified version of the stories due to the level of my kids’ proficiency. The preparation part consumed lot of my time, and the presentation part was very short. Maybe it is irrelevant to say whether it was worth to prepare or not, but my hope was that the kids would enjoy and appreciate my lesson. That’s matter!

Now I suddenly want to talk about the condition of the PC in computer lab. This is something frustrated to talk about. Poor maintenance. Once I inserted my pen-drive into the desktop, I could hear sound like squeaky mouse. 40 plus trojan viruses ulat-ulats detected (hulamak!) Luckily there is no way virus could penetrate my personal computer. Thanks to Jacky Chan and Lee Chong Wei for flying kick all the viruses. Kapersky always your smartest choice. Waiting my pen-drive to be cleaned up took 5 minutes of my golden time. The problem can be solved if all the computers in the computer lab are formatted and installed with Kapersky Anti-virus. That was one of the reasons I prefer not to use computer lab. You might ask why not in the classroom. By setting up projector in the classroom is possible only at night because there is no curtain in Year 1 classroom. So pupils cannot see clearly as their eyes are small plus the lighting.

By now, you know that I was teaching Year 1 pupils. Oh boy, is all girls! Looking at their cute faces, I could still recall some of their names. I wonder why they showed ‘peace’ sign when I snapped their photos. Who taught them that? Why not ‘nike’ sign? Overall the enrolment of Year 1 kids are 30 pupils. For my past 3 months teaching them, I never got full attendance. There must 3 to 5 girls absent everyday, either they were sick or didn’t finish my homework. They liked to be praised. They liked to go to toilet. Their moods can be changed all the time. I scold them today. They smile at me back tomorrow. They forget things easily. That’s why I need to keep reminding them. Reminiscing the challenges of using ICT in the classroom I guess was the time itself. The challenge surfaced was good to mould and exercise my passion. Of course there are many persons I would like to thank and grateful with, but one particular person now I want to thank is Mr. Raj (not Arvind Raj). He was my mentor and I could say he was very resourceful person. Through his guidance and comment, I can stand still to teach Year 1 kids.

Guten Tag!

Testing power 123…Heard my voice?321 testing power. How and what shall I start with? First time using Windows Live Writer. Through this platform, I can write and edit my post offline then publish it online like what you’re reading now. WORDPRESS is better than BLOGSPOT? I thought is just the same for ‘attention seekers’ to express their feelings virtually? Disagree? I was trying to add my personal lame friendster blog to Windows Live Writer, but got problem with the blog server. Never mind then.

Salam 1 Malaysia and Happy Rabbit Year to all of you. Rabbit is clever and talented, but lazy and like to hide. May 2011 be just the way it’s supposed to be. Previous semester I have blog on Technology, and now another blog for ICT? I just feel like what I am doing now is similar to the previous course on Technology. But I realized that my amount of foods today not like what I ate yesterday. So I am looking forward to dig more what this course has offered or shaped me. Let’s teach and learn from one another.

To be honest, I feel demotivated right now. I feel like just want to go out there, to the world and earn money now instead of studying for final semester. I am gearing up slowly. Very slow. Wake me up. I need you to knock my shell. I will take it easy for this semester. I am still thinking hard what to choose for my elective course. German? Unless I crush into a girl from Deutschland. I attended German class for the first time to testing 123. Half of the battle is won because I know how to say Ich liebe dich. (I love you). Research on childhood? Theories again, not practical. or Media dan Politik? I can practise my Bahasa and learn something new. What a final! SOS. Whatever my choices of elective, I am going to take full responsibility on it. Guide me Lord.

I end this first entry by quoting what Dr. Antony Gomez has said and make my eyes popped out during the second class. He prefers people to call him Mr. Gomez and he teaches me Issues in ESL classroom.

“Have you hated a subject just because you hate that teacher?”

By the way, mein name ist Aaron Lee and this is anawesomeromanticoutstandinglynobel.wordpress.com
